Natural Hair Loss

Hair is made of a type of protein know as keratin. A single hair is made of a hair shaft , a hair root root that remains embedded in the the skin, and a hair follicle from which the hair root grows. Below the hair follicle follicle lies the hair bulb where the hair's color pigment, or melanin, is produced. Each hair has a normal cycle of life and hair loss up to 50 to 100 hairs each day is considered as natural hair loss.

The normal cycle of hair growth continues for about 2 to 6 years. Each hair grows about 1 centimeter each month during this growing phase phase. About 90 percent of the hair on a persons scalp is growing at any one time while the rest 10 percent of the hair on the scalp remains in the resting phase. After a period of 2 to 3 months, these resting hair fall out due to natural hair loss and new hair starts to grow in its place. This is a natural hair loss.

Majority of people lose about 50 to 100 head hairs per day and these hairs are replaced by small new hair. These new hairs grows back in the same follicle on a person's head. The loss of about 50 to 100 hair every day is pretty normal and amounts to natural hair loss. But if you are losing more hair than the rate of natural hair loss then there might be some cause for concern. The medical term for sever hair loss hair of losing enough hair that a person has visibly thin or balding patches is known as alopecia. There are many causes of hair loss which is above the normal range.

If you have excessive hair loss and are befuddled about what is causing severe hair loss then it might be prudent to see your doctor. A dermatologist of a general physician will be able to determine properly why the hair is falling out more than the normal rate of hair fall and suggest a treatment that will correct the underlying problem.
