|
The most common type of hair loss that is found prevailing in women primarily occurs in a diffused pattern, something having close relation with their lifestyles and both pre as well as post menstrual cycles. Diffused hair loss is most commonly caused due to hereditary causes, but in some cases, the underlying cause behind such a state of diffused hair loss may be medications, and other factors. Common or ‘hereditary’ baldness in women is better known as female pattern alopecia. This particular type of feminine baldness is genetic and can come from the ancestors who belong to the maternal or the paternal end. There are two enzymes that are primarily held responsible for this particular kind of diffused hair loss in females, mainly Aromatase and 5a Reductase. Amongst these two above mentioned enzymes, the former is found only among the females, while the later is common also in their male counterparts. The causes of hair loss in women are varied and offer different solutions as well.

The action of 5-a reductase is primarily held responsible as being the main cause of androgenetic alopecia in men, as this enzyme has the chemical capability as well as reactivity to convert the hormone testosterone to DHT. This complex chemical substrate popularly known as DHT is responsible for initially shrinking and then gradual shedding of those hair follicles that are affected by it.
Women have half the amount of 5-a reductase as compared to their male counterparts, but have relatively larger levels of the enzyme called aromatase, especially at their frontal portion of the hairline. Aromatase is primarily held responsible for the creation of the female hormones estrone and estradiol. It is also known to lower down the rate of formation of the so called DHT. The presence of DHT in case of females is responsible for giving their frontal hairline a different look, as compared to that of their male counterparts.
Some other popular causes of hair loss in women are enlisted below:
- Obstetric and gynecologic conditions such as post-partum and post-menopausal states or ovarian tumors
- Anemia – iron deficiency
- Thyroid disease
- Connective tissue diseases such as Lupus
- Nutritional - crash diets, bulimia, protein/calorie deficiency, essential fatty acid or zinc deficiency, malabsorbtion, hypervitaminosis A
- Stress – surgical procedures, general anesthesia, and severe emotional problems
